Resolutions - Let's reduce stress & anxiety by simplifying January!

Updated: Nov 1, 2020

I was wondering how I could simplify some of this January stuff, like de-cluttering, making resolutions for myself and getting my 2020 journal started and then I thought that maybe it would be a good idea to share it with you. So, each week this month, starting today, I’m going to release a short Blog about simplifying some of this January stuff!!

I'm going to kick off with the new years resolution thing as this is the most pressing one for me and probably for you guys too! 1. New Year resolutions New years resolutions or goal setting doesn’t have to be complicated! Sometimes, we don’t always know what we want and when that happens we can end up following and pleasing others rather than doing something we actually want to do. So, let go of any fixed ideas and spend some time having a think about what YOU really want more of in this coming year.

I don’t know about you but I’ve done all that joining a gym, dieting and giving up stuff and usually I end up giving up before the end of January because it’s unrealistic and not attainable and sometimes I’ve done it because of the pressure from others. Basically, in the past, I’ve been doomed to fail and felt rubbish for doing so. Over the last couple of years I have changed all that and set realistic intentions instead and I also include a “word of the year”. For me, it means less stress and anxiety and brings about change in an easier way. Perhaps you would like to do something similar. If so, all you have to do is think about what you want more of in your life. This might be focus, continuity or....

Next, using "positivity" as our word example, think about how you can bring that positivity into your life such as spending more time with friends, doing what you love most, exploring what you can appreciate about something negative. Then, the fun bit. Its time to anchor the word/phrase in place with triggers and prompts such as putting stickers or notes in your diary and changing your screen saver. You could bring some positivity to this right now by making a list of all the exciting things you could do which are positive. Whoops, I'm getting carried away and we are supposed to be keeping it simple so…

  • Choose your word or phrase

  • Think about why you want to bring this into your life and how you can do it

  • Create yourself some triggers and prompts i.e for positivity you might write positive quotes in your diary or stick smiley faces in prominent places

Et voila. Done! Simple eh.

Something to remember… The whole point is to keep it simple and enjoyable with less stress and anxiety. Next week's blog is all about decluttering! I hope that you are going to enjoy this series of blogs and that it will be fun but if anything difficult comes up for you I would remind you that it is important to look after yourself whilst you are exploring what goes on for you. You can do this by journalling, talking to a trusted friend or seeking counselling. If you want to make an appointment for counselling then you can give me a call on 07478754839. Don’t struggle alone!
