Julie Kuhn - Counsellor & Creative Supervisor

Supervision with Jules

Feeling unsure isn’t a sign you’re failing, it’s a sign you’re human. It’s surprisingly common to feel embarrassed bringing a tricky client to supervision, especially when the issue feels “basic.” But nothing is basic when you’re the one holding the emotional weight.

Supervision helps ease fear, not amplify it. I offer online, creative and compassionate space where we slow things down, get curious, and untangle whatever’s pulling at you so you leave steadier, clearer and more connected to your work.

A Creative Approach to Supervision

A space to reflect, explore and reconnect with your practice

Supervision offers us a place to pause, take a breath and look at our work from a different perspective. Sometimes talking things through is exactly what we need. At other times, words alone don't quite capture what we're experiencing.

This is where creativity can offer something different.

As a BACP-accredited Person-Centred Creative Arts Counsellor and Integrative Creative Supervisor, I bring creative exploration into supervision in the form of  imagery, colour, shape, metaphor, simple art materials and creative prompts.   Using these forms of creativity can help us to explore the experiences, questions and uncertainties that arise in your client work.

You don't need to be artistic, and there is no right or wrong way to engage. The invitation is simply to be curious and see what emerges.

Looking beyond the obvious

Have you ever found yourself thinking about a client long after a session has ended? Perhaps you've felt stuck, uncertain about something or perhaps noticed a familiar feeling emerging in the room. Maybe you have a sense that something important is happening, but you're not quite able to put it into words.

These experiences are a natural part of therapeutic work, and they deserve space to be explored without judgement.

Through creative reflection and curiosity we can begin to notice patterns, consider different perspectives and become more aware of what might be happening within the therapeutic relationship.

A colour might capture a feeling that has been difficult to name. A shape or image might help you explore a sense of being stuck. A metaphor might offer a fresh perspective on a familiar situation.

We can gently explore how your own responses, experiences and assumptions might be informing the work, while we can also consider the client's perspective and the wider relational, cultural and organisational context.

This isn't about searching for a single right answer. It's about opening up possibilities, deepening understanding and supporting thoughtful, ethical practice.

My approach: Creative, reflective and collaborative

I draw on the CRAFTS model of creative supervision, alongside Proctor's model and Hawkins and Shohet's Seven-Eyed Model. These frameworks help us consider your client work from different perspectives while keeping your learning, wellbeing and professional responsibilities in view.

Our sessions might include:

  • Creative exploration that  uses imagery, cards, objects, metaphor, colour or simple creative exercises to approach a question in a new way.

  • Reflective practice helps to get curious whilst making time to consider what feels helpful, what feels challenging and what the work is bringing up for you.

  • Relational awareness  lends itself to exploring the feelings, responses and dynamics within the therapeutic relationship.

  • Focused reflection identifying what you need from each session, whether that is thinking through a specific piece of work, exploring an ethical dilemma or developing your confidence.

  • Professional growth to strengthening your autonomy, recognising your learning and developing a clearer sense of yourself as a practitioner.

  • A wider perspective providing opportunity to consider  the social, cultural, historical and organisational influences that shape our work.

I work integratively rather than relying on one model or perspective. We can adapt our way of working to suit you, your client work and what feels most useful at the time.

A space where you can bring the unfinished bits

You don't need to arrive with everything worked out.

You can bring the uncertainty, the questions you haven't quite found the words for, the work that has stayed with you, and the moments when you wonder whether you've missed something.

I aim to offer a compassionate and reflective space where you can explore openly, feel supported in your development and receive thoughtful reflection and gentle challenge when appropriate.

I trust you as the supervisee to remain responsible for your professional decisions and to develop your own understanding of what is right for your work. My role is to work alongside you, collaborate and help you consider different perspectives, strengthen your practice and remain attentive to your own needs as well as those of your clients.

Because caring for clients also means paying attention to the person doing the caring.

Creativity as a way of listening

For me, creative supervision is not about having to make something or do an exercise in every session. It is about being curious and noticing.

Sometimes we will talk. Sometimes drawing or doodling might happen or we'll work with an image,  maybe explore a metaphor or use a simple creative prompt and sometimes the most helpful thing will be to sit with a question and allow it time to unfold.

There is no pressure to perform, produce or get it right.

My hope is that supervision becomes a space where you can reconnect with your curiosity, recognise your strengths, explore your uncertainties and leave with a little more clarity about the work ahead.

Let's explore whether creative supervision is right for you

I offer integrative creative supervision for counsellors and therapists who value thoughtful reflection, curiosity, professional development and a supportive supervisory relationship.

Sessions are held online via Zoom or Teams, unless otherwise agreed

Fee: £60 for a one-hour session, with reduced fees available for those on a low income.

If you're curious about how creativity might support your supervisory practice, you're welcome to get in touch for an initial conversation about your needs and what you're looking for in supervision.

You don't need to know exactly what you need before we begin. We can work that out together.
